What is the Diabetes Prevention’s Healthy Native Program?
The Cherokee Nation Diabetes Prevention Program established the Healthy Native course to prevent type 2 diabetes. It has been successful in Cherokee communities for the past 10 years. Research has shown that people who lose up to 7 percent of their body weight by making modest changes can reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 58 percent. The Healthy Native course consists of 16 weekly group sessions and 6 monthly maintenance sessions focused on eating healthier, increasing your activity and losing weight. Sessions are facilitated by trained lifestyle coaches. For more information, please call 918-453-5000 or toll free at 1-800-256-0671.
Classes are available in select areas. Contact the Health Educator in the Cherokee Nation health center nearest you.
